Peterhof Palace and the Beautiful Water Fountains

The most famous and arguably most impressive of the Peterhof Palace Fountains is the grand cascade. The fountains within this magnificent work of art provide a torrent of water from each side and the water cascades in all directions in a mesmerising display and at the foot of the fountain is the Samson fountain. This was added to the display in around 1730 and depicts the moment that Samson tears open the jaws of the Lion to mark the victory in the Great Northern War over Sweden. Directly from in the middle of the Lions mouth shoots a jet of water straight up into the sky for over 20 metres and this is the highest of all the water jets and all the fountains at Peterhof Palace.

Water Fountains traditionally use a pump to send water through the fountain from the basin; however the unique topology of this area is perfect for creating pressure to supply the water to the fountains. Under the ground of the palace are natural springs and the water from these springs collects in the reservoir in the upper gardens of the palace. The difference in height of the upper gardens and the lower gardens creates enough pressure to drive the water through the fountains. The amazing facts of the Peterhof Palace water fountains doesn't stop there as the Sampson Fountain has its very own aqueduct which stretches for over 4km in order to draw enough water.

The Peterhof Palace comprises of several large park areas which include some splendid buildings which are home to many wonderful national treasures of this region and these compliment the water fountains superbly.
